What's a L5P Duramax Delete Pipe?
An L5P Duramax delete pipe (for 2017–2025 GM trucks) is a straight-through exhaust pipe designed to physically remove and replace the factory Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.
Key Benefits of Installing a L5P Duramax Delete Pipe
- Reliability: Eliminate service DEF warnings and electronic limp mode for good.
- Lower Maintenance: End expensive DPF cleanings and the need for constant DEF refills.
- Engine Longevity: Lower backpressure to protect your turbo and internal components.
- Fuel Efficiency: Stop fuel-heavy regen cycles to maximize your miles per gallon.
- Better Cooling: Drop operating temperatures by removing restrictive exhaust bottlenecks.
- Performance: Experience instant throttle response and much faster turbo spooling.
L5P Duramax Delete Pipe: Deleted vs. Stock
| Dimension |
Stock |
Deleted |
| Horsepower |
Factory rated (445–470 HP); power is often capped to protect emissions hardware. |
Increased; Safe gains of 50–150+ HP are standard; race tunes can push 650+ HP. |
| Fuel Economy |
Lower; Significant fuel is wasted during "Regen" cycles to burn off accumulated soot. |
Improved; Eliminating regens and backpressure typically gains 3–5 MPG on the highway. |
| Maintenance Cost |
High; Requires frequent DEF refills and expensive NOx/EGT sensor repairs. |
Minimal; Permanently removes the need for DEF and high-cost emissions component service. |
| Reliability |
Moderate; Emissions sensors and DPF clogs are the #1 cause of "Limp Mode" and downtime. |
Significantly Enhanced; Removes the most frequent mechanical and electronic failure points. |
| Exhaust Gas Temp |
High; Filter restrictions trap heat; EGTs spike dangerously during active regeneration. |
Lower EGTs; High-flow design drops sustained operating temperatures by 150–230°F. |
| Legal Status |
100% Street Legal; EPA and CARB compliant. |
Off-Road / Competition Use Only. |
| Exhaust Flow |
Restricted; The dense DPF and SCR assembly create a massive bottleneck for gases. |
Maximum; A straight-through 4" or 5" pipe allows the engine to "breathe" without restriction. |
| Backpressure |
High; Increases drive pressure on the turbo, leading to heat and internal stress. |
Minimal; Virtually eliminates backpressure, resulting in a faster-spooling turbocharger. |
| Sound |
Silent; Multiple stages of emissions hardware act as a heavy muffler. |
Aggressive; Unlocks the signature "V8 Diesel Rumble" and distinct L5P turbo whistle. |
| Supports Tuning |
Limited to emissions-compliant software only. |
Required; Must be paired with a delete-capable tuner and an unlocked/swapped ECM. |

How to Install a L5P duramax delete pipe
Installing an L5P Duramax delete pipe (2017–present) replaces the factory emissions exhaust components with a high-flow pipe designed to reduce exhaust restriction, lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), and improve overall drivability.
Installation Steps
- ECM Unlock & Calibration: The process begins with ECM unlocking and tuning using a supported platform. This prepares the engine management system for the removal of emissions components and disables related diagnostics.
- Factory Emissions Exhaust Removal: The factory exhaust section containing the DPF and SCR (DEF) components is removed. Associated sensors such as EGT and NOx sensors are disconnected or electronically disabled according to the tuning configuration.
- Delete Pipe Installation: The L5P delete pipe is installed in place of the factory emissions exhaust. These pipes are designed to align with factory hangers and provide proper clearance around the frame, drivetrain, and suspension components.
- Sensor & Connection Verification: Any required sensor fittings or plugs are installed, and all clamps and connections are aligned and secured to ensure a leak-free exhaust system.
- System Check & Final Verification: After installation, the engine is started and inspected for exhaust leaks. The tuner is used to clear any remaining diagnostic codes and confirm proper operation during a short test drive.

FAQ
Why is the L5P so much harder to delete than older Duramax models?
Starting in 2017, GM encrypted the E41 (and later E42) ECM. Unlike older models where you could simply plug in a handheld tuner, the L5P requires a physical unlock. You must either send your factory ECM to a specialist or buy a pre-unlocked unit. Without this "cracked" computer, the truck cannot accept the software required to run without a DPF.
Do I really need CAN Bus Plugs?
Yes, they are mandatory. On the L5P, the sensors under the truck are part of a communication loop.() If you simply unplug them and leave the harness open, the electrical "circuit" is broken, and the truck's computer will lose communication with other modules, preventing it from starting. These plugs cap off the harness to keep the computer's network closed and protected from the elements.
