Why the L5P Needs a Special Tuner

GM's E41 ECU Security Explained

The 2017 to 2023 L5P runs the E41 ECM, and GM locked it at the factory. A standard tuner cannot read the stock calibration through the OBD-II port, and it cannot write a new one. That is why the handheld programmers that worked on the LML and LMM do nothing on this truck.

Before any custom file goes in, the E41 has to be unlocked. You can send the ECM to a service, install a pre-modified ECM, or, with HP Tuners on a 2018 to 2023 truck, run the upgrade through the OBD-II port. Your unlock method decides which tuning tool you can use afterward, and that is the detail most buyers miss.

Important: This guide covers 2017 to 2023 E41 trucks. 2024 and newer L5P trucks have different access requirements, so confirm your model year before ordering.

Consequences of Flashing Without Proper Support

A bad L5P flash costs more than a bad flash on an older Duramax. Watch for these:

  • Interrupted writes. Low battery voltage during a flash can leave the ECM unresponsive. Keep a stable charger on the truck.
  • Wrong file for your truck. A calibration built for a different year, VIN, or transmission (6-speed vs 10-speed) can cause rough shifting, codes, or limp mode.
  • Hardware mismatch. A delete calibration on a truck that still has its DPF and sensors, or the reverse, can set codes and trigger a derate.
  • Missing CAN-bus parts. After sensor removal, many L5P builds need CAN-bus plugs for the modules to communicate properly.

Option 1: EFILive FlashScan V3

EFILive replaced the FlashScan V2 with the V3 in late 2019, so the V3 is the device to buy. It has a long history on Duramax trucks, and many shops still prefer it.

How EFILive Handles L5P Security

EFILive does not unlock the E41. It writes to an ECM that has already been unlocked, and recent V8 software releases added flashing and editing support for E41 operating systems. You also cannot pull a stock file from a locked L5P through the OBD-II port, so the starting file usually comes from your calibrator.

Per HP Tuners' service terms, an ECM upgraded by its service works only with HP Tuners tools. If you want EFILive, plan your unlock path first and confirm it with your calibrator before you buy hardware.

Cost: Hardware and License

The FlashScan V3 is listed at $625 as of May 2026. You also need the GM Tuning Option, which includes two VIN licenses (extra licenses run $125 each), plus an unlocked ECM and the tune file itself.

Delete Tunes

EFILive is the tool, not the tune. Calibration files come from your calibrator, who writes them for your exact hardware.

Pros

  • Long track record on Duramax platforms
  • Deep datalogging and table-level control
  • Transmission controllers do not need a VIN license on current software

Cons

  • Costs stack up: device, tuning option, unlock, and tune
  • Steeper learning curve than the other two options
  • Confirm your calibrator supports the L5P on EFILive before you buy

Option 2: HP Tuners MPVI3 and MPVI4

HP Tuners L5P Support History

HP Tuners says it has offered L5P custom calibration since 2018. In 2023 it released an in-vehicle E41 upgrade kit built for the MPVI3. Today the MPVI4 is the current interface, starting at $399.99, and the MPVI3 still works on the L5P.

On a 2018 to 2023 truck, VCM Suite can upgrade the ECM directly through the OBD-II port with an MPVI3 or MPVI4. A 2017 truck still needs the send-in service or the upgrade kit. The send-in service is $649.99 and takes up to 10 business days plus shipping. A new pre-upgraded ECM is $1,499.99.

The Credits System Explained

HP Tuners licenses each controller with Universal Credits. An L5P E41 ECM takes 6 credits, sold separately at $49.99 each, or about $300. Credits are not included in any unlock service price. L5P support also runs on VCM Suite beta builds, so keep the software current.

For a 2018 to 2023 truck using the direct OBD-II route, plan on roughly $700 for the MPVI4 and credits, before the tune file.

Pros and Cons vs EFILive

Pros

  • Unlock and tuning live in one ecosystem
  • Direct OBD-II upgrade means no ECM removal on 2018 to 2023 trucks
  • Active calibrator community and shop support

Cons

  • The upgraded ECM works only with HP Tuners tools
  • Credits add cost on top of the interface
  • 2017 trucks face send-in downtime unless you buy the kit

Option 3: EZ Lynk AutoAgent 3 With an AMDP Tuning Package (EngineGo)

EngineGo's L5P tuner offer is built on the EZ Lynk AutoAgent 3 and AMDP custom tuning. It is not a delete kit with a pre-loaded file, so here is exactly how it works.

Pre-Configured Calibration

After you order, AMDP builds your tune file and delivers it through the EZ Lynk cloud. The package lists 30+ files with emissions on and off, several power level options, and optional transmission tuning for T93 trucks. The product page lists the files as single power tunes, and Shift-On-The-Fly is listed as coming soon with a separate switch. Heavily modified trucks, such as those with a FASS fuel system, CP3 conversion, or aftermarket turbo, can email support for a custom file.

Plug-and-Play OBD-II Process

The AutoAgent 3 plugs into the OBD-II port and connects to your phone over Wi-Fi. You accept the AutoLink request in the app, pick the file that matches your model year, and flash. AMDP delivers files without removing your ECM or sending it anywhere. Fill the DEF tank before you flash.

What You Buy

Three pieces make the setup for an L5P:

  • The EZ Lynk AutoAgent 3 device, sold separately without a tune file
  • The AMDP tuning package from EngineGo's range of L5P Duramax tuner packages, either 2017-2019 or 2020-2023, in Limited Support (4 weeks) or Full Support (lifetime revisions)
  • The CAN-bus plug connector, listed as required for proper communication

On a 2020 to 2023 truck, those three pieces add up to roughly $2,350 at current listing prices, so check the product pages before you order. See the Legal Notice below for federal emissions law.

Best for: first-time deletes and owners who want support instead of a learning curve.

Watch for: the file is built after purchase, not instantly, and tune support packages are final sale.

Which Tuner Should You Choose?

Picking an L5P Duramax delete tuner comes down to who writes the tune, how much you want to learn, and what you are willing to spend.

  • Choose EFILive if you already own a FlashScan, tune other GM trucks, and your calibrator works in it on the L5P.
  • Choose HP Tuners if you want to control the whole process, run a shop, or want the direct OBD-II unlock on a 2018 to 2023 truck.
  • Choose EZ Lynk with AMDP if this is your first delete, you want guidance, and you do not want to learn editing software.

Match the calibration to the hardware on your truck. The tune file has to match the hardware on your truck, so plan the calibration and the L5P Duramax delete kit together.

Not sure where you land? Send your year, transmission, exhaust setup, and any mods to support before you buy.

Legal Notice: Federal Emissions Law

Federal law prohibits removing or disabling emissions controls on a vehicle the EPA certified for road use. It also prohibits selling or installing parts and software designed to do so. The EPA's position is that labeling a product "off-road" or "race only" does not change this for a road-certified truck, even if the truck is no longer driven on public roads. Delete calibrations, ECM unlock services, and related hardware fall under these rules. Customers are responsible for understanding federal, state, and local law before buying or installing anything. EngineGo cannot give legal advice, so consult a qualified attorney if you are unsure.

FAQ

Do I need to unlock the L5P ECM before tuning?

EFILive and HP Tuners both need an unlocked E41. The EngineGo AMDP page lists no ECM removal. Ask support whether your year needs extra steps.

Can I use EFILive on an ECM unlocked by HP Tuners?

No. HP Tuners states its upgraded ECMs work only with its own tools.

Is EFILive or HP Tuners better for an L5P Duramax delete tuner setup?

HP Tuners has the simpler unlock on 2018 to 2023 trucks. EFILive suits owners who already use it and have a calibrator who supports the L5P.

Do I need CAN-bus plugs?

The EngineGo AMDP package lists them as required. Check your model year on the product page.

Which trucks does the EngineGo package fit?

2017 to 2023 Silverado and Sierra 2500/3500 with the 6.6L L5P Duramax. It does not support Kodiak or International L5D trucks.

Is a delete tune legal?

Federal law restricts removing or disabling emissions controls on road-certified vehicles, and an "off-road" label does not change that. See the Legal Notice above.

Can I return a tune package?

Tune support packages are final sale, so confirm fitment before you order.

Check fitment before ordering. Email your truck details to cs@enginego.com, and our support team will help you choose the right setup for your L5P.
