ECM unlock on an L5P Service or tool-based unlock Done before the tune is written, and the requirement varies by year

Before You Start

Gather these before you touch the truck:

  • Your tune files assigned to your account. The device alone does not change how the truck runs. Your tuner builds files from your VIN and hardware list, so send both when you order.
  • A smartphone with mobile data. Your phone joins the device's Wi-Fi during setup, and downloading files needs a data connection.
  • Stable power. Modern control modules react badly to voltage drops. A new battery does not remove the need for a regulated power supply or maintainer.
  • Extra hardware for your year. 2018 and newer Ram Cummins need a bypass cable. L5P trucks commonly need an unlocked ECM, most often flagged for 2017-2018, and may need a CAN bus plug connector.
  • Time. Block out a stretch where nobody needs the truck and nothing interrupts the flash.

Missing the cable for a newer Ram? EngineGo lists a 2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins bypass cable for that application.

Step-by-Step Setup and Flashing

Step 1: Confirm Your Order Details

Check that your tuner has your correct year, engine, transmission, VIN, and hardware list. A file written for the wrong setup is a common cause of a bad first flash. If you added a turbo, injectors, or a different exhaust after ordering, tell your tuner first.

Step 2: Test the Connection Before Any Hardware Work

If you plan to install parts, confirm the Auto Agent 3 connects to your truck and your tuner can reach it first. Finding a communication problem is easier with the truck assembled than with the exhaust on the floor.

Step 3: Set Up Stable Power

During a flash the ignition is on and many modules are awake, so battery voltage can sag even on a new battery. A basic trickle charger may not keep up. Use a regulated power supply, or a charger with a supply mode, that holds steady voltage under load. Many installers use at least 10 amps, and your tuner or the EZ Lynk instructions set the exact requirement for your truck. Then confirm:

  • Battery terminals are tight
  • Lights (including automatic headlights), radio, and climate control are off
  • All doors are closed, and nobody will open them during the flash
  • The truck is parked safely
  • Your phone has enough charge to finish the job

Step 4: Install the EZ Lynk App

Download the EZ Lynk Auto Agent app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account, or sign in if you already have one. Check the store listing for the current minimum phone software version.

Step 5: Plug In the Auto Agent 3

Find the OBD-II port, usually under the dash on the driver's side. Push the device in until it seats fully. A loose connection can cause communication errors later.

On a 2018 or newer Ram Cummins, connect the bypass cable at the same time, with the ignition off. It needs to be connected while you flash. You can leave it connected if you route it cleanly. Many owners run it through the firewall, and a qualified installer can handle that part.

Step 6: Connect Your Phone to the Device

Check that the device's indicator light comes on. Open your phone's Wi-Fi settings and join the Auto Agent's network. Open the EZ Lynk app. It should detect the device, read your VIN, and show your truck's dashboard. Accept the connection when prompted and fill in any vehicle details the app asks for. If the app asks you to link a technician, enter the details your tuner gave you.

Step 7: Pull Your Files

Your tuner's files appear in your account, and you may get a push notification when each one arrives. Downloading needs internet access. A phone connected to the device's Wi-Fi can show "No Internet" even when the truck connection is fine. If files do not appear, switch your phone to a connection with data, then reopen the app. If your phone keeps dropping the device network for another one, turn off auto-join for other networks while you work.

Step 8: Install From ECU Profiles

From the app's dashboard, open the menu, choose your vehicle, and select ECU Profiles. Menu names can change with app updates, so follow what the app shows. Then:

  1. Review the list of available files.
  2. Download the file you want.
  3. Tap Install.
  4. Follow each key-on and key-off prompt exactly as shown.

Do not unplug the device, close the app, leave the Wi-Fi network, turn off your phone, or disconnect the charger while the flash runs. When it finishes, the file shows as Installed.

Platform Notes

Ford Power Stroke. A transmission flash may be required in addition to the engine flash. Follow the app's instructions in order. Browse the Power Stroke tuner collection if you still need a package.

Ram Cummins. Engine and transmission calibrations are often separate products. EngineGo lists 68RFE transmission tuning for 2010-2021 trucks. The Cummins tuner collection shows the engine packages by year.

GM Duramax. A separate transmission flash may be required here too. L5P trucks commonly need an ECM unlock before any calibration is written, most often flagged for 2017-2018. Some also need a CAN bus plug connector, and EngineGo lists them for 2017-2019 and 2020-2023 trucks. Ask support what your year and package require.

All platforms. EZ Lynk tuning does not support PTO units. If your truck has one, confirm with support before ordering.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Flashing on battery power alone. Voltage drops during a flash cause errors and incomplete writes.
  2. Starting hardware work before testing the connection. Test first.
  3. Staying on home Wi-Fi. If your phone jumps back to another network, the app loses the truck.
  4. Interrupting the flash. Leave everything alone until the app confirms it is done.
  5. Installing the wrong file. Install only files built for your exact VIN, engine, transmission, and setup.
  6. Skipping the key prompts. The app walks you through each ignition cycle. Follow them in order.

What to Do When Something Goes Wrong

Work out which stage failed before you act. A missing file, a connection problem, and a failed flash need different responses.

What you see Likely stage Next step
Phone cannot reach the truck Local connection Check the ignition state, the device indicator light, and the Wi-Fi network
No files appear Account or file access Ask your tuner to confirm the files are assigned to your account
Install sticks at 0% Before programming starts Note the exact message and contact support before changing connections
Flash stops after it starts Programming Keep power on, record the error, and follow support's recovery steps

If a flash stops partway, do not unplug the device, cycle the key repeatedly, or try another file. Recovery depends on your controller and where it failed, so send support a screenshot of the error. Codes that appear after a completed flash are a separate issue, so send them to support with your log.

After the First Flash

The Auto Agent 3 keeps working after the file is installed. Use it to:

  • Watch live data. Boost, exhaust temperature, and transmission temperature stream to your phone. Set warning thresholds so the app alerts you when a reading climbs, which helps on long grades with a trailer.
  • Send logs to your tuner. If the truck hesitates, surges, or runs hot under load, record the event and send it. Note the trailer weight, grade, and weather so your tuner has something to work with.
  • Read codes before clearing them. Save freeze-frame data first.
  • Adjust supported settings. Depending on your truck, the app can correct the speedometer after a tire size change, change tire pressure warning thresholds, and update fuel tank capacity.
  • Run a transmission relearn. After hardware or tuning changes, some trucks shift better once the transmission relearns.
  • Run a stationary DeSoot. On emissions-equipped trucks, the app can start a parked regeneration where your truck supports it.
  • Keep the device current. Firmware updates arrive over the air through the app.

A calibration does not raise your truck's GVWR, axle, tire, or hitch ratings. If the truck overheats or loses fuel pressure under load, treat it as a mechanical issue and have it checked while your tuner reviews the log.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need mobile data?

Yes, for pairing, downloading files, and sending logs. Plan your first setup where you have reliable coverage.

Do Ford and GM trucks need two flashes?

They may. A separate transmission flash can be required alongside the engine flash. Follow the app's order and ask your tuner if you are unsure.

Can I flash an unlocked or modified truck?

Prior modifications change the file you need. Tell your tuner about every hardware change before you order, and send photos if your setup is not stock.
